The current Hearthstone ladder is getting a complete overhaul on April 1st with the introduction of the new league system. In this post, I will go through the new system and what it means for players in detail. In the old system, the Hearthstone ladder consists of 25 new player ranks ranks , 25 regular ranks, and Legend. In order to advance through the ranks, you need to gain stars. You gain one star for a win and lose one star for a loss. Below rank 20, you cannot lose stars. Below rank 5, you gain bonus stars for win streaks: every consecutive win starting from your third win in a row grants you two stars instead of one. There are rank floors that you cannot drop out of during a season.

But this yearly rotation will not be your usual “start-of-the-year” when it comes to Hearthstone. We’ll talk about Demon Hunter in a separate article, but for now, let’s see what all those big changes that are coming to ranked play are.
Instead of them, we are now having 5 Leagues, a system you might be familiar with from other competitive games, including other Blizzard’s games. Those five leagues are good old Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond, while Legend remains the same as it is now. Each League will also have rank floors at ranks 10 and 5, where you cannot go down in ranks for match losses, similar to ranks 15, 10, and 5 in the old system.
If you are a new or returning player, you will first have to play through “New player ranks”, from 40 to 1. In the old system, at the start of the new season, you’re being positioned depending on your results from the previous ladder month. Now, everybody starts from rank 10 Bronze, but with a big “Star Bonus” based on your performance the last season.
This multiplier is lowered by 1 each time you hit ranked floor in your climb ranks 10 and 5 in Leagues , and so it gradually becomes smaller the higher you climb up until it disappears.
The new Hearthstone ranking system explained

Matchmaking is the process of determining appropriate player pairings when players are queuing up to play Hearthstone. The matchmaking process functions differently for each game mode. In each case, the goal is the same: to try to find a player of similar matchmaking value rating, rank or record as possible. When a player enters the matchmaking queue the system will attempt to find another player in the queue with an identical matchmaking value.
If a perfect match is not found, the matchmaking system will “wait a few seconds” and then search again. For information and statistics on specific types of matchmaking, see Ranked , Casual , and Arena. Matchmaking rating MMR is a special internal rating system used for certain types of matchmaking. MMRs are ‘hidden’ and cannot be viewed by players. MMR is adjusted after each match, depending on the outcome of the match, and the MMR of each player:.
Ranked mode MMRs are not reset at the start of every season. Casual mode MMRs do not reset. In Casual mode and the Arena, new players are initially placed into special matchmaking pools to ease them into the game. Casual mode matchmaking includes a new player pool.
Hearthstone’s new ranked system is now live

In order to produce a turn-based card game such as this successfully, a well-made and highly capable back-end is most certainly needed. A modular back-end, made from many comprehensive components which work together to bring any idea to life within a short space of time to accommodate for prototyping. To create the Hearthstone demonstration, I started by adding functionality to existing GameSparks components, preparing them to work in a way fit for the Hearthstone example.
The most basic building block of any game and any back-end is the player. The player had to be initialised in a way that suited the game, to do that I had to give the player a rank, starting at the lowest rank which is rank 25 with 0 stars. I also had to give the player a deck of cards. The platform supplies this and also adds the new player to the player database. By having logic in the response I can reference the newly created player and add values to their database, saving values which were used later down the line.
I also created a template used by every card that contains information about the type of card, tier of card, attack rating, hitpoint rating, spawn cost and the effect that card holds. The way the cards work in this example is completely modular.
